Drywall Repair & Replacement After Water Damage

Wet drywall rarely dries back to good

Drywall that has soaked up floodwater or leak water loses strength, stains, and can harbor growth behind the wall even when the face looks dry. In most flood cases the damaged section has to come out. Florida GC Group LLC (Lic. #RG291104194) cuts out water-damaged drywall, replaces it, and finishes it – texture and paint – so the wall looks original.

The flood cut – what it is and how high

After flooding, contractors typically cut the wall above the water line – a “flood cut” – to remove soaked drywall and insulation and let the wall cavity dry fully. How high depends on how deep the water stood and how far moisture wicked upward; moisture-meter readings, not guesses, set the line. Cutting a clean, level line also makes the replacement patch faster and the finished seam invisible.

Our drywall repair process

1. Verify drying first. We do not close walls until moisture readings confirm the structure and wall cavities are dry.

2. Cut out and remove damaged drywall and any wet insulation in the repair zone.

3. Install new drywall, tape and finish seams, and match the existing texture (smooth, orange peel, knockdown).

4. Prime with stain-blocking primer where water staining occurred, then paint to match – or repaint the room.

5. Reinstall or replace baseboards (see Baseboard, Trim & Interior Finishing).

What drywall repair costs

Published national guidance for water-damaged drywall repair puts most jobs between $150 and $2,500 (RestoreAdvisor figures, cited in our Flood Damage Repair Cost guide), with large flood-cut-and-repaint projects running higher. Your actual price comes from our free assessment and itemized estimate – measured on your walls, not a national average.
